Doubts

Definition: To call to question or to mistrust; the inclination to disbelieve; to be in a state of uncertainty or indecision in regards to truth; to waver in opinion.

  1. It's the Devil's business to tempt us to doubt God's Word and to try to get us to believe his word.
    • Genesis 3: 1-6 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
    • 2 Corinthians 11: 3 [The Enemy likes to undermine simple, childlike faith.] But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
    • 2 Corinthians 2: 11 [When the Devil can persuade us to believe his lies, he gains the upper hand:] Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. [See also Romans 6: 16.]
    • John 8: 44b [The Devil is the father of lies.] He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. [See also Acts 13: 10; Revelation 12: 9.]
    • 1 John 4: 1 [Beware of voices that breed doubt and fear in your mind. Test them with the Word, prayer and godly counsel.] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
  2. It's not a sin to be tempted with doubts, but it is a sin to entertain doubts and yield to them.
    • Romans 14: 23b For whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
    • 1 Corinthians 10: 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
    • Hebrews 3: 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
    • James 1: 12-15 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
  3. The Devil's lies, or others' doubts, don't change the facts of God's truth.
    • Numbers 23: 19 God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the Son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? Or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

    • Luke 12: 29,30 [Over-concern about physical needs:] And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

    • Psalm 78: 11,19,20 [Forgetting all the wonderful things that the Lord has done:] And [they] forgat His works, and His wonders that He had shewed them. 19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? 20 Behold, He [through Moses] smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can He give bread also? Can He provide flesh for His people?
  5. Doubt is voiced in murmuring. Those who voice doubt are spreading Satan's propaganda.
    • Numbers 13: 31-33; 14: 1,2 [The men of Israel who brought back a doubtful exaggerated and negative report concerning the land which God promised to them, caused the people to murmur against Moses.] But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. 14: 1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would God we had died in this wilderness!
    • Psalm 106: 24,25 Yea, they [the Children of Israel] despised the pleasant land, they believed not His Word: 25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord. [See also Numbers 14: 36; Deuteronomy 1: 28.]
    • Ephesians 4: 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
  6. Some of the other consequences of doubts:

    • James 1: 6,7 [Doubts cause the Lord to withhold answers to our prayers:] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

    • 2 Thessalonians 2: 12 That they all might be damned [judged] who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

  8. It is the Lord Who overcomes our doubts in response to our sincere concern and prayers.
    • Psalm 51: 10-13 [David prayed:] Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of Thy Salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.

  9. Resist the Devil and yield your mind to the Lord.

    • 1 Peter 1: 13a Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober. [See also Luke 12: 35.]

    • Proverbs 3: 5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
    • Isaiah 55: 8,9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the Heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

    • Mark 2: 5-8 [Carnal reasoning got the learned scribes nowhere, except to cause them to doubt in Jesus.] When Jesus saw their faith [those who brought the sick man to Jesus], He said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. 6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, 7 Why doth this Man thus speak blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only? 8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in His Spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, He said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
    • John 3: 3,4,7,9,10,12 [Even the learned rabbi, Nicodemus, could not understand the simple spiritual truths of Jesus, until he stopped his carnal analyzing.] Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 7 [Jesus said:] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto Him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of Heavenly things?
    • John 6: 53,60,61,66 [Carnal reasoning, when tested by the Lord through His radical message, hurt the faith of some disciples, yet it was simple abiding faith that kept the true disciples through it all.] Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. 60 Many therefore of His disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? 61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples murmured at it, He said unto them, Doth this offend you? 66 From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him. 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the Words of Eternal Life. 69 And we believe and are sure that Thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.
    • 1 Corinthians 1: 21 [Worldly wisdom doesn't help us receive the things of the Spirit.] For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

But we have the mind of Christ.
    • Ephesians 4: 17,18 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.

For he would recover him of his leprosy. 4 And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel. [Naaman went, and after following Elisha's instructions, was not only healed of his leprosy, but became a believer. For the full story, read the whole chapter.]

[See also Galatians 3: 6-9.]

At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Hebrews 11: 11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful Who had promised.
    • Exodus 3: 11,12 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 And He said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

Or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. [Moses still doubted, as shown by verses 13-16, so God let his brother Aaron be Moses' spokesman.]
    • Psalm 31: 22 [King David had his times of doubts and despair also, but the Lord always saw him through:] For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before Thine eyes: nevertheless Thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto Thee.
